01' Wont start sometimes.....

Ok guys heres the deal..... I know if it aint broke cant fix it will here is what I have...

Yesterday wife driving around all day shopping, truck fine no problems...Comes home truck been off for bout a hour or so and she needs to run to store...Get in ,notices the WTS (wait to start) is not on tries to crank and nothing...She gets out to shut door left open by kids tries again and truck cranks but dies....I tell her to take my lil ranger and I go look and WTS lite on truck cranks fine....let it run 10 mins or so shut off and did not crank on first try, shut ignition off take out key put back in and all is fine...Wait about a hour or so go back out and try again starts on first crank...Leave truck over nite was about 48 so not cold and try this morning and notice no WTS so listen for fuel pump and then here what sounds like to me a relay energizing, fuel pump on and WTS on truck cranks fine...Truck does not die going down road or anything....I am thinking a relay of some sorts and wanted you guys to point me in the right direction if you think this is the prob...Have checked batteries and voltage is 14 and 14 running and 13 and 13 when off so that is good....I do have a system on truck kinda like lojack that will disable vehicle could this be causing intermittent start?? What about the gear shift being loose?? Saw that thread as well....Sorry for the long post but trying to get as much info to you guys as I can....

Thanks for all the help

Ron

Sounds like you need to disconnect your fuel bowl heater... They tend to short out.... Usually when this happens it blows the fuse though. Either way try disconnecting it and see what happens.

This is where I would start Ron if they break the circuit that feeds the fuel bowl heater and the PCM then i would suspect this. Also check the fuse holder for this circuit as well I have seen them loosen up over time and cause intermittant problems

Check which fuse holder Jim Im sorry still a little new at all this.... I just checked the easy stuff last nite and then came to mind about this stupid cut off thing and it has a relay and like I said thats what noise I was hearing that sounded like a relay energizing and then WTS lite was on and pump was pumping and truck cranks fine...I know guy told me this morning that there was a wire they had to splice in ?? where who knows but gotta get this fixed for wife wants to get rid of it .....

Just disconnect it and see if you have more issues... But also start to look into your lo-jack system.

If it sounds like a relay, read your owners manual and swap the important sounding relays like PCM or IDM for the non critical sounding ones like blower motor. If your blower motor starts to act up, you've found a bad relay.

Shorts to ground or broken circuits can also cause this problem, but usually the broken things don't fix themself. If the relays or fuel bowl heater don't help, check the wiring near the 42 pin connector (square box with a bolt in the middle of it on the driver side valve cover under the air intake tube). Also check the wiring going to the ICP sensor and IPR to make sure the insulation isn't brittle or there are any chaffed wires.

I talked to Ron on the phone tonight and it seems to me that his issues are with the anti theft system. The truck would not start he heard a click ant the WTS light cane on truck fired right up. It seems that they tied into the PCM feed for the kill switch. He is going to look into it some more this evening.

Well with fingers crossed think that the anti theft device was the culprit...Disabled it last nite(took it completely out of the truck) and when key turned on WTS lite and pump come on immediately everytime...Cranked up fine this morning with no problems as well and wife happy too...no getting rid of truck now...Had to do some serious wire fixing due to the IDIOT who wired that in...GEESH a monkey could of done a better job...never seen such a bad job of wiring anything...If I had done something even close to that at my Job Id be outta work, But so far all is good now and thanks so much guys for all the input it certainly helped out....
