Brake Questions

I've had my 1998 Expy EB about 2 months. There are 2 things going on with the brakes that I have questions about.

1) About once a week or so, the ABS light on the dash will come on. Shutting the motor off and back on will cause it to go away. So far, I haven't notice any particular pattern about when the light will come on. Anybody seen this before?

2) Frequently, the brakes squeak pretty loudly. The pads are in pretty good shape, so it's not the little alert thingys making noise. Is there anything I can do to stop this, short of replacing the pads? If a pad replacement is required, what are recommended brands/types?

Brake Questions

Does the ABS light come on during hard braking? or just normal?

If it comes on occassional for no apparent reason it could be the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) Its an $11 part that will go bad and the ABS light will come on. What will tell you for sure is getting the codes. My local shop charges $75 to do this diag. :-X23 I have finally convinced the wife to let me buy a scanner.

The brakes squeaking is common. I have had good luck controlling the squeaking by keeping them clean. i.e. I wash the vehicle more often and spend time with the highpressure nosel aimed through the wheels at the brakes. When you do this you will notice a lot of really black dust comeing out.. Thats goodness.

Brake Questions

The abs light thingy could be a loose connector. Happens frequently on our...*cough*montana*cough*...I still haven't taken the time to check it (removing the wheels is complicated! ) but I'm pretty sure it has to do with it...it's very frequent...just some scrapping if it's corroded, and some electrical grease will do the trick.

About the squeaking, there is ONE thing that will work...change pads (I mean get pads from a different manufacturer and/or different compound). Quite discouraging is the fact that there's no way to know before you test them if they will squeal or not. . What you can do if it turns you mad, before killing yourself, add some taper to the "beginning" of the pad, but in the "vertical" way...if you see what I mean...

Go ahea with brake questions...I should have quite realistic answers (if there's one thing I good at...that's gotta be brakes!)
