I'm in the middle of the dreaded oil pan job on my 89 f250 5.8 351 windsor. I have the old pan out and in the process of getting the exhaust off the manifolds all 4 nuts broke on the studs in the manifold. I need some recommendations on getting them out. I have heard drill them out and use something called a helicord? ANY IDEAS?
Your talking about the studs that hold the Y-pipe to the exhaust manifolds?.........How much stud is left?......usually you can use vise grips and twist them out if plenty is left to grab hold of. If not.........you may have to remove the manifolds from the engine to be able to drill out the studs with a cobalt HSS drill bit and install heli-coils or re-tap the threads, which also raise the specter of breaking off exhaust manifold bolts while removing the exhaust manifolds from the engine. It may be possible to do this with the manifolds still on the engine, but from underneath at bad angles and hot metal chips dropping in your face, its not recommended.............May the force be with you.
all four studs still are sticking out enough to get a vise grip, but won't move. I have read to head up the manifold up. I have sprayed a half can of pb on it. gonna let it sit over night and try again. and yes i'm talking about where the Y-pipe connects to the manifolds.
A friend got mine out by putting a nut half way on the stub of thread left and puddled some weld in the nut. Soaked the area with PB and it came out the next day. If you grab with vise grips this option will not work.

If you have access to a welder, this is the way to go. I assumed that you did not.
If you have enough room for it, running the engine til the manifolds are hot helps a lot. A mechanic buddy of mine does it. What you can then do is use the vice grips and back the studs out. The expansion usually helps loosen everything up and spraying some PB on it helped.
