Cruise Control Problem

Warning... long winded post ahead.

There is an intermittent problem with the cruise control on my SD. If I'm running cruise, it will randomly "kick off". Usually you can hit resume and get it working again, for a few miles, before it kicks off again. Lately, I've been having trouble even getting it to engage.

So, after some searching around on here, I did the self test procedure that has been posted several times. This one:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...ml#post8315477

I ended up getting 2 flashes at the end, which is supposed to be "brake pedal position switch circuit failure". I happen to have the speed control testing portion of the workshop manual on pdf so I went through the pinpoint tests.

The stoplamp switch and wiring is ok per pinpoint tests G1, G2, and G3. The result after test G3 says to "install a new speed control servo"

Given that this part is over $300, even from Ed, I want to investigate this some more. Has anyone ever looked into the servo to see if there's anything to be serviced/cleaned/fixed in there? I might take it off and have a look.

Also, has anyone ever bought a cruise servo from somewhere other than the dealer? I've only checked Auto Zone so far and they didn't offer it.

Thanks in advance!

Whoops... I just realized I put this in the Excursion forum.

Mods -- if youd like to move this to the Super Duty forum that would be great. The Ex forum would likely have some good input but I probably won't find as many 5.4L owners over here...

If it's doing it regularly hold your foot under the brake pedal, holding it up. I have saw several time that the brake switch is to sensitive and will kick the cruise off on rather small bumps. The switch may be adjustable.

Yeah I had this issue with my 2000 F250 and the switch was set way too sensitive. It would shut off from any bump.

I bought all the parts including the steering wheel from pick-n-pull and installed them on my 1999 and they work great. I think the servo cost me 35.00 by itself.

Have you checked to see if there is an open recall on your truck for the cruise control? I bought my truck this weekend and I will be taking it in this week for a recall on the cruise control.

Thanks for all the replies!

Driving it yesterday I had the same intermittent operation. It was working fine and I was tapping on the side of my brake pedal and it wouldn't trip. Not like pushing the brake pedal, like tapping it left/right on the side of the pedal. I never could get it to trip like that.

Then, about 15 miles later, it tripped on its own, and I couldn't get it to set again.

I'm going to replace the brake switch first to see if that fixes it. For $13 its a cheap try.

Anyway, I'll keep reporting back with what I find......

OK, I replaced the brake pedal switch and now I'm getting three flashes on the self test. So, cruise control deactivation switch is next, the one on the master cylinder. I just ordered it from Ed.

Hope this fixes it

This won't help you, but if somebody does a search on this in the future it might help if I post my experience.

Last summer my cruise control would deactivate randomly and sometimes not engage. At first I could just pull up on the clutch pedal (yes, clutch pedal) to make the cruise work. Eventually, that didn't work and I had to slap the clutch pedal with my foot. That would work almost every time. Soon after that I could hear a "click" sometimes after releasing the clutch.

It turned out that the switch connected to the clutch pedal was sticking on it's slider rod and not falling all the way back into the rest position. If I jostled the clutch pedal then it would be just enough so the switch would release and retract back to rest position. Sometimes it would release by itself and the "click" noise was the switch hitting the bottom of it's travel. I looked under the dash and saw the section that slides on the rod was twisted a little bit and didn't fall down into the groove it is supposed to rest in. I just freed (is that a word?) it up and spun it a few times to loosen it. Worked fine for a year now. Eventually, I will have to replace the switch, I suppose.

Well, I finally got around to replacing the cruise deactivation switch and still no joy. The cruise won't come on and it fails the self test... still with three flashes.

So I've replaced the brake pedal switch and the switch on the master cylinder with no luck.

The pinpoint tests lead to "install a new speed control servo" which I'm not going to do at $300. I suppose I'll start looking around the bone yards.

Any other ideas?

Thanks again!
