Iwaslooking at a'00 Explorer down the road for sale . The info on the windshield said it had 91k , but needed an O2 sensor, and two door handles. The door handle thing I have heard of and can fix no problem, but how big a deal dollarand time wise is the O2 sensor , and what other problems should i be aware of? They want $2000.
In addition to the SOHC timing chain issues, make sure all the climate control stuff works properly. You don't want to get into a blend door fix issue.

The O2 sensor is not too expensive or hard to replace. Check with a parts store or online to see how many the truck requires. Some Fords have 6 sensors and if the truck is run for too long with bad O2 sensors it will run rich and soon ruin the cats and that's a bad thing.

A 2000 Explorer will either have 3 or 4 heated oxygen sensors (HO2S) - one for each cylinder bank and one after the catalytic converter. If there is a converter for each cylinder bank there will be a total of 4 O2 sensors. If there is only one converter there will be 3 O2 sensors. I think by 2000 all Explorers had 4 HO2S, but I never inspected a V6. I've never heard of a vehicle having 6 O2 sensors, what the heck model and engine of Ford was that!?!
