Help! exhaust question

I have a 2001 super crew F-150 with the 5.4. I am looking to put a good quality exhaust system on it. Of course, I'm looking for the deep throaty sound.
I am looking for suggestions on what kind of muffler to go with.
Are there any dos and donts that I need to look for?
Also, I am wondering if true duals would be ok or should I stay with 2 into 1.

Thanks

Help! exhaust question

I would go with a true dual setup but put a H pipe in. My Uncle has a 97 with a 4.6 with true duals and 18" or so glasspacks and it sounds great. Not too loud at idle (nice low rumble) but when you hit the throttle it really purrs Find a local exhaust shop that has a good reputation and have them bend the pipe. You will not be sorry!

Help! exhaust question

Thanks Christop. Afew more questions. I've had glasspacks on vehicles before. I know they sound good, thats what I want, but how do they compare in performance gains compared to...borla, flowmaster, turbos, etc, etc? Is there much difference and are they worth the extra price?

What do you mean by H pipe and bending the pipe?

Thanks...

Help! exhaust question

I am not aware of a true dual pre-made system for your truck so what I meant by having a local shop bend the pipe is having them bend and fit the pipe from scratch.

As for the H pipe, when you put a true dual setup on a vehicle it is always best to ad a H pipe. Basically all a H pipe is a small pipe that connects both exhaust pipes. This helps equal the pressure and in most cases will give you better HP numbers. This is a picture of a exhaust system that has a H pipe

As for the mufflers or glasspacks, most glasspacks are cheaper. Mufflers boil down to sound preference. Check out www.edelbrock.com www.borla.com ..... and others. They all have sound clips of there exhaust systems. Good luck!

It won't be as loud with that H-pipe. You only gain about 1 or 2 hps with it. Don't get one of those fake dual exhaust systems that replace your exhaust behind the conveter. You will still have single exhuast from the engine to the cat. Whats the point? If you really want it to have a throaty race car like sound, get rid of the cat.
