2002 Explorer erratic fuel gauge Please Help!!!!

Hi, my wife 2002 Explorer start to give me a lot of problems, last week we fill the fuel tank completly, next day start with erratic readings needle goes down and up, sometimes read empty sometimes half tank, i dont know where to start to verify if someone can direct me going to be apreciate. TX

Sounds like the float in the tank is bad which would require dropping the tank and replacing the unit. I suppose it could be the gauge itself, but the sporatic reading problem you describe usually means the float.

OMG, can you tell me where i can find a guide how to take down the tank or any idea if i have to buy the complete unit or i can buy the float separetly,TX.

Before dropping the tank, I would check the tank electrical ground and gauge wire for continuity.

if it moves up and down randomly, its more often a loose or broken wire than the float/ switch.

TX for the advice guys i going to verify on the weekend, for loose cables or connectors prior to take down the tank and post results as always TX for the advice.

All my fuel guages read erratically when i park on inclines, off by as much as 3/8 tank reading. Are you on level ground?
