What's wrong with my cam?

Long story short:

I bought a my 1977 F150 a year ago with a freshly rebuilt 460 by the previous owner - actually his mechanic. He did not know any of the details, but it had a stock intake and manifolds, feels like a smooth stock 460.

I want more power, so to start I bought a new carb and intake since the old carb was worn out, leaky, and missing some parts.

I pulled the intake today - the lifters are only about 1/2 on each lobe of the camshaft! Is this right???? The lifters are so far off that they ALMOST hit the next lobe on the camshaft. This really doesn't seem right, but figured I would check. Is it just a cheap cam that was made poorly? Was it installed incorrectly? I am at a loss, but want to make sure it is right before I move on.

Wow - interesting. I had a 1969 429 apart just recently and the clearances were not nearly as close as they are on this one.

There is a core plug set in from the back of the engine that sets the proper cam depth and lifter bore/lobe alignment, this can be done wrong. The lifters don't set perfectly centered on the lobes but almost touching the next lobe sounds off.
