Yeah I will never cut another intake dont worry. I never ended up getting that other engine. I went back for a second look after finding out block and head #s could of been anything from 390-428. We looked at the crank and it was 2u... A 390! Block and head casting were 68 so someone thought they had a gem. My 390 went back to the machine shop and it's junk. We test fit the 428 crank because the 390 one was standard bearing as well as the 428 so it was a direct bolt in. Turns out the pistons were a low compression truck one and they would work with a minimal .07 skim off the top. Problem was the cylinders had water damage that couldn't be honed out due to improper storage over the past couple months on my part and needs to go to a .040 bore. We found that it was the block that was decked not the heads so I would have to shave the sides of the heads to match intake again. Justfor an extra kick to the nutz the new crane cam spun a lobe even after carefull assembly with lube and zinc oil additive and higher rpm speed on initial fire up for proper break in. Too much machining costs when I can get another 428 block bored .030 over with matched cj pistons for 1000$ just a ferry ride away from me. I know ive changed my mind a few times on this build but it's alot of back luck and lack of knowledge on my own and others fault that has over complicated this whole thing... I appreciate help from you guys with your knowledge on this stuff. As I say again this is not my strong point and I'm just trying to gain as much knowledge as possible to make it right.
So now I'm looking into some info on best cam choice for this .030 428 block I'm getting with cj pistons. The compression should be about 10:3:1 and I dont need any vacuum for power brakes as I run hydro boost. I'm looking for bottom end grunt power. My tires again are 44''s with a 5:13 gear ratio. I had a crane 343941 that spun a lobe so I'm looking for something similar as crane went out of business. Any suggestions on what you guys run ?
