1996 Explorer 4.0 4X4 automatic 4R55E. After a code saying the shift solenoid C was stuck in off position I changed the solenoid, filter and fluid.
Went for a test drive and after a series of strange shifting events it was stuck in 2nd gear. Came back and changed the transmission internal wiring harness because I noticed flaking wire insulation during the solenoid change. I also changed fluid again because the fluid smelled burnt.
No difference in the stuck in 2nd grear situation. All gear positions incuding neutral and reverse are 2nd gear. It won't even start off in 1st just second. I have checked all linkage and wiring connections.
I'm just not sure where to look next. No codes showing now at all.
Ok, you are having nearly the exact same problem I am having. Friday while I was driving around town my O/D OFF light was flashing. I tried turning my O/D on and off a few times and nothing changed, then as I was driving the light went off. Saturday I drove the truck around like normal with no problems until I was about a mile from home and it stuttered a little bit. I had just filled up with gas and thought maybe I had just let gas get too low and it picked up some sediment. The next morning I drove to an event about 5 miles from my house and about a mile away from home it jerked real bad while normally accelerating away from a light. Then going up a hill I almost didn't make it. Since then, I have been stuck in 1st gear. There is no 2nd, no reverse, no neutral and even in park, if you hit the gas it jerks forward. I drove it home at about 20 mph and thought maybe something with the O/D was the problem. So I hit the O/D off button and it began making a loud whirring noise, like a very loud fan. Tried turning the O/D back on and the sound stayed the same.
I am pretty good at fixing whatever breaks, but I am terrible at diagnosing stuff. It looks like I'm going to be on my bike for a while...
