the truck started making a slight ticking noise around the middle of last week and its really starting to worry me. the only place you can hear it is in the cab of the truck or standing beside the driver mirror. at first i checked to see if it was an injector but everyone steered me away from that. its not too bad of a noise and a couple of my buddy's 7.3's do it to. but now that i've heard it i keep listening to it and its getting me worried one of the friends trucks that was making this noise ended up having to have a manifold gasket replaced. i was wondering if mine could be the same? it seems to only do it when the truck is lugging taking off or when shifting to a higher gear and barely getting on the fuel. it didn't start making this noise untill last week when i was on I-40 and this guy in a common rail kept messing with me. so needless to say i sort of got on it a little bit. after that it started making the noise. im going to get a flashlight and check the underside of the manifold for discoloration this evening. but while im checking do you have any other suggestions?
still cant figure out what it is. there wasn't any black around my manifold and i couldn't hear any air escaping at idle from anywhere. i did see just a little oil under my turbo but im pretty sure its just a o ring in my pedestal. whatever the ticking is dont seem to be getting any better. i took my airbox and battery box and hot side pipe off and couldn't see anything leaking from anywhere. im going to take it to a shop tuesday and let them hook it up to the computer to see if it will show anything on there. anyone have any ideas of what it could be?
I can honestly say I've worried about ticking coming from my engine, at times it seems to come and go and we had a few ticking engine threads not to long ago, some just what I deal with and some have major issues on the horizon, I hope thats not the case, good luck, subscribing.
About a year ago my truck started making a ticking sound, slowly got progressively worse, turned out to be the donut gaskets in the Wye pipe on the up pipes behind my turbo, replaced them with the up dated bellowed up pipes and no worries since. Hope this helps, good luck.
I have that ticking noise as well. It didn't show up until after I put the bellowed up pipes on. I have run all kinds of tests and can't seem to figure it out. Sounds like exhaust but no evidence of same. Drives me nuts. it goes away if I keep it hammered though. Oh yeah, problem solved.
Thanks Big Poppa, good to be back, hope all is well.
Dan
Good deal, everythings good Dan, thanks. I'll shoot you a PM tomorrow. Another senario, Pete Duckfan had a problem with an anoying ticking, found out it was his exhaust manifiolds. He has a nice how to thread if in fact you find thats the problem..
when i got my hpop o rings and gaskets put in he did tell me the gaskets in my up pipes needed to be replaced. but why would it just now start making the noise? i've heard if its injectors you will lose power. i haven't lost any power at all it still runs great just sounds like crap. how hard are those gaskets to put in? i've looked at it and it looks like it will be a pain to get to. and like someone just said the noise really ain't as bad when my foot is in it pretty hard
how did duckfan narrow it down to the manifold? a friend of mine who had the same problem suggested the manifold so i checked the drivers side yesterday and couldn't find anything out of the ordinary.

This is where gauges are a plus, a leak with the up-pipes will yield higher EGT's I believe, not only are they for information on running and towing but troubleshooting. And from what people say here those pipes are a bear but they get them done. But if you do find out its your up-pipes, don't waste your time and money on dounut gaskets, theres a International up-pipe kit that fixes it for good, RiffRaff has them.

You mentioned that it started after romping with the common rail, my guess would be that the doughnut gaskets were already no their way out, the romping created a whole bunch of extra pressure and heat and finished one or both of them off. The bellowed up pipes to install are a bit of a project depending on your abilities, turbo needs to come out. Their is a good write up on Guzzles site for doing the job, give yourself a full day and a friend to get it done, one of the better mods I've done to my truck.

Their is a line up pin on the wye behind the turbo, if that pin is not lined up correctly in the rear of the turbo you will get an exhaust leak, it will look as though the clamp is on correctly due to it's design but the pin holds the wye and the turbo apart just enough to make you crazy.
