highboy wont shut off help!
I got in the truck and started it. The starter motor was hanging up and not shutting off. The ignition key wont turn the truck off in the off position! I got it to shut off by pulling the positive cable from battery. Any idea on whats wrong? This is a new thing that just happened. Now i try to put the positive cable back on and it sparks like crazy. 72 ford f250 with a 390

That could be...could be ignition switch too, right? I've never seen one fail that way though.
The sparking when the cable is about to be attached means something is all set to draw current as soon as it can get it, and is arcing as soon as the cable gets close enough. My guess is the starter is what is drawing that much current.
If you take the 2 small wires and the large starter wire off the solenoid, you should be able to put a circuit tester there to see if the starter post on the solenoid is hot. If it is hot in that set-up with the key in off &/or run, it will be the solenoid for sure.
PS - I am not the best wiring guy. I can get 'er done, but there's lots of people that know way more than me.

Easier way to determine if it's the ignition switch or not:
Just pull the two small wires off of the starter solenoid on the fender. Now reconnect the battery. If after doing that the starter still tries to turn over, the solenoid is at fault. If not, continue on:
Reattach to the solenoid the small wires. If it starts trying to crank over, the ignition switch or wiring is at fault.
