edelbrock will not idle

I have a edelbrock 600 with manual choke. It ran just fine until I swapped out motors and when i went to start it with new motor timing was off and backfired through carb pretty good. Now it will not idle. if you keep the rpm's up and drive it works fine but when r's get low it dies out. I know holley's where good for blowing power valve out if they backfired dont believe these have one . Any ideas guys?? Thanks in advance

You're right, no power valve to blow. Download the manual from Edelbrock and take it back to the stock settings. A piece of dirt could have came loose and messing up the idle circuit. Back the idle mix screws all the way out and blow the passages out with compressed air would be a start. They're easy to work on, so you can pull the top off and check for dirt, float level etc.

First thing to check, the metering rod pistons. Sounds like 1 or both has stuck in the raised position. When this happens, fuel will drip thru the booster causing a mega-rich condition at low rpm, but it will run ok once you get the rpm's up.
I had that happen on brand new, out of the box, 1405 edelbrock. The metering rod retainer spring was installed incorrectly.

Best of all, you don't even have to open the carb to check these.
