1998 Ford F-150..4.6 4x4..My rear DS axle seal is leaking and making a mess out of the brakes. When I called for a seal they asked what rear end do I have. I assume it is the 8.8, but not sure. I know it takes the 75-140 synthetic fluid ( says that on a tag). Can anyone decipher the tag for me? Also...the book says to add 4oz. of friction modifier. As far as I know, I do not have a limited slip. Does it hurt to add that when I refill whether or not I really need it? Thanks for any help... Jeff
First, the 8.8 axle is more of a round shape. The 9.75 axle is more of an oblong shape, and it has 12 bolts on the differential cover. Ive heard that it doesnt hurt to add the friction modifier whether you have LS or not, but you could do a search and find a VIN decoder to see if you have limited slip, i believe.... at least i think the VIN tells you whether you have LS. Give it a try.
Thanks for the help. I counted 10 bolts and it is more like "rounded"....so 8.8. On the door tag it says "Axle 19". I googled that and got 3.55 non-limited slip. So...I guess I don't need the modifier.
