Ok guys, here is my situation. I need a truck bad. I work for my father in law's construction company. He picks me up and takes me home every day. I really don't think he minds doing it, but I don't want him to have to.
Anway, I am waiting on my tax return check to come back but I only want to use $3500 to buy a truck. I found a 1995 F150 4x4. It has the 4.9L and a 5 speed manual. This is the perfect truck for me. A fullsize 5 speed with 4 wheel drive is like my dream. The only thing that kind of scares me is the mileage. It has 153k miles on it. I know at 15 years old that is probably a little below average, but it still getting on up there a little.
Would you be hesitant to buy a truck like this? I always read that the 300 is an excellent engine and is perfect in a truck. I want a truck with a truck engine. These new trucks don't have them and I don't have the money for one anyway.
Any input you guys could give me would really help. I just hope the truck is still for sale when my refund comes.
If it's been taken care of, there is nothing wrong with having 135k on it. The 300 is one of the most reliable motors ever made and will often go past 500k if the rest of the truck lasts. The 5 speed doesn't have a reputation for great strength, but if you keep it full of fluid I think it's a solid unit when not abused. It has three rubber plugs on top that leak and if it looses too much fluid.... klablooie.
If it doesn't look like it's been abused, runs well, and doesn't obviously need repair then I wouldn't hesitate to buy it. How much are they asking? Do a KBB check on the value and don't go over that amount.
Tell us more about the truck. Hows the body, interior condition etc. They are good indicators of how the truck was taken care of. Remember to check the obvious things like spring hangers, brake lines, rust on the frame, fuel tanks, brakes, u-joints,radius arm brackets and bushings etc. Make sure the CEL isnt on either. Is the truck 4x4? if so, make sure the t-case operates correctly and goes into 4 high, neutral and 4 low easily. Good luck.
