I've got a 1980 f100 v8 302 automatic that has been sitting for over half a year. I just now got it running again. I reversed halfway down my driveway, then put it in drive but the back wheels don't want to turn, I have to nearly floor it to get it to crawl back up the driveway. I don't know much about vehicles but I am thinking the emergency break has clenched, is this correct? I had the emergency break on for the entire time it was sitting. If so then what is the easiest way to fix this?
By the way, I did notice just before reversing it down the drive that the break fluid was completely drained from one of the resevoirs in the master cylinder. I filled it up, but have not bled the air from the lines yet. The breaks work but the break pedal still has no cushion to it. Could this be related?
99% of the time it is the parking brake cables. Until you get new ones, get under the driver's side of the truck, and you will see where the cables go into the sheaths going to the rear axle. Take some vise grips and pinch the inside part of the cable about 1/2" away from the sheath, and then beat on the vise grips sideways with a hammer to drive the cable back toward the rear of the truck, to try and release the brakes.
Same thing happened to me when driving different vehicle home to Texas from So.Fla. Florida folks in the Southern part do not use their parking brake much, if at all. The parking brake innards(drum brake) were all rusted and when I applied the brake, as I always do, the drivers side locked up. Managed to unhook the cable and that-side brake released. Once I got the vehicle home I completely rebuilt the brake system.
So I discovered that it was the driver side rear wheel that was locking up. I contracted the shoe and disabled the E-brake on that side. Then bled all the brakes. It now no longer locks up. Thanks for all the help you guys.
