Hi all- I changed the CDR and I am still getting a good amount of black smoke out of my rig when shifting up through the gears. It is less but still noticeable when cruising at 55 in 4th gear but when starting off it smokes like an old school bus.
I have been searching and reading on here and I am guessing this might be a timing issue. However, before I delve into tackling that, I have to confess this is my first diesel. When I hear "timing" I reach or a timing light and look for the distributor (truth be told). That being said I watched a guy on youtube do a 30 second shot on timing (loosen 3 bolts and turn the IP), what he didn't do is explain what I am listening or looking for in results. Being a newbee I have the foggiest idea of what is an improvement or a disaster waiting to happen.
Any help from the experts would be greatly appreciated. Pics and video would make it easy on a rookie like me. Thanks folks - Tony
Timing is best set with a meter, how ever if you are going to do it by ear, you first need to confirm your cold start advance is working. I usually unhook it and use a jumper wire to the positive side of the battery to set the timing. You want it to rattle like a powerstroke with it on and quieten down with it off. Twisting it towards the passenger side advances it and a little goes a long way, I suggest a line width and then try it again.
make a mental note of where it is now so you can return it.
The blach smoke may be just to much fuel turned to it. Do you have a pyro guage.
