My clutch

Hi (new to forums)

I have an 86 f250 6.9 4spd and seems happy, however sometimes (10%) of the time when i start from a stop i get a sound like i dunno, a really loud grinding or like dragging a chair across a floor sound coming from what i assume is my clutch. Still engages and pulls but the sound is loud, and painful.
Any ideas or experiences?

P.S truck is new to me but seems a bit sluggish. Have driven newer turbos, expecting too much i guess.

Can you clarify? Do you get the sound when the clutch pedal is first depressed and before you touch the shifter? Or do you get the sound with pedal depressed and when you are shifting into another gear?
As for performance a non turbo IDI will not come close to a Power Stroke.

If you get the noise when you push the clutch pedal down, throw out bearing would be my first guess.
If you get the noise when you are starting to move as you let the clutch out, U joints would be my first guess.

If the tranny is otherwise quiet, I will second Dave, also throw in tranny mount and or carrier bearing. The noise can also be comeing from the rear as sound will travel the driveline and fool you sometimes. Does it have any weird shakes or vibrations when taking off or any time.
