so I started my truck today and there was a loud almost grinding noise. Push clutch in goes away. It had bearing noise before this but nothing like this. I just bought truck a week ago previuos owner put new hd clutch in have paperwork. He also said the noise when I bought it was normal for hd clutches. Sounded just like my subaru when TO bearing was going. Don't know if normal or not. To me it sounds like metal on metal not bearing noise. It also was jumpy today I moved 5ft twice. dove yesterday and seemed fine but was hard to downshift to 4th for some reason. any help appreciated
Sounds like your throw out bearing is going south on you. At least thats the way mine acted when it went. Made it about 200 miles until it went completly.
I agree on TO bearing. I've been experiencing the same thing in my TDI Jetta for 20k miles or so. Sounds like that's something that could leave you sit tomorrow, or in a year from now. But I'm certainly no authority on these types of issues
If the previous owner put a dual mass flywheel in it when he/she did the clutch then they CAN be rather noisy. However generally speaking when you have noise in neutral with the clutch out then that is TO bearing noise. But just as an FYI the growl that you may hear when taking off in lower gears (Granny/1st/reverse) is 100% normal for the zf6 trans. Good luck let us know what you figure out. Also let us know per the paperwork what kinda clutch was put in it
Subscribed. Just changed my clutch and I'm now getting that grinding/growling noise when the clutch is out in neutral. It's a brand new TO bearing, so I'm a little worried. Also, anybody have a picture of the front of the transmission with it out of the truck? This was my first clutch change and I was a little curious about the fork and how that secures in there. I'm wondering if that's where the noise is coming from??

Hey bud, i'll snap a few pics and load to my album. My trans is sit'n under truck as i speak, divorced from the motor..(TO broke in half. No warning sign). The fork gets attached to the TO, like it snaps onto it. Then you have a black pivot block directly across from it.
Is that pivot block supposed to be attached to it in any way?
My noise is not only present in neutral with the clutch out, but also in 3rd and 4th gear below 1300 RPM. Above that it's quiet. Does this sound like a trans issue??

Could you describe the sound? Anything like,...wind thru a pipe, sound? If so, i've been chasing it for 2+ yrs.
The pivot block attaches to trans case, through a little hole. You'll see the "tang" from outside the housing, where the starter is..(backside of starter).
"growling" describes it best, metallic growling. Before I changed the clutch it was only in low gears and only at low speeds when torque was applied- the noise would go away above 1200 rpm. Now after I changed the clutch (replaced TO bearing) it's quiet in low gears and noisy (same noise) in 3rd and 4th gears.
Like i said before the zf6 is known for growling... First time i did the clutch in my truck the growl seemed to be less for the first few hundred miles...
Is there clutch adjustment. I think mine might be to tight and causing rubbing when depressed. sorry first post wrong noise is when clutch is depressed

no adjustments. If master/slave assy is working properly, and clutch fork is not bent nor is the pivot block broken into pieces, clutch then, should work just fine.

Well ya, but if its depressed then it will need therapy or medication or something!!!
