Hi first time posting here. I just got home from work at three in the morning after having to have a buddy pull me there with his chevy truck. I am hoping somebody has had a similar problem and can help me out. The truck started fine and went about five miles before the battery light started to flicker, I have already replaced the alternator so I was hoping it wasn't that again and I was also hoping i had enough juice to get home. i didn't, all of a sudden i lost power and had to pull over. Now I still had all my lights inside and out and when i let the truck sit for about five minutes or so it would start and run for about 10 to 15 seconds then sputter and die. I'm guessing fuel pump. Does this sound reasonable? And where is the fuel pump located. Thanks for any help anybody can give me. Oh sorry, its a 2000 Excursion limited with the 6.8 and a little over 253,000 miles.
From the sound of things, you probably need to have your battery replaced. Unless my batteries are relatively fresh, I get them warrantied out at Autozone if I ever have to change my alternator.
If it still doesn't run, I'd look for a plugged fuel filter, a dying fuel pump, or both.
TD is right on track. I would check both of those. I am curious to know how you got a 6.8 in a 2000x. I didnt know they made them with 6.8 then.
not sure what you mean here. i've never had any problems buying parts for it. the vin is IFMNU43S6YEC69810, i've never tried to look it up. i'm going to get a book tomorrow or well i mean later today(i work nights) anyhow are there two pumps or just one? like i said the truck will start then die. i can turn the key off and on a few times and then start it which is why i am wondering how many there are. if there is one that charges the system (in tank maybe) and one to run it(hopefully on frame). am i way off base?
take your battery to any parts store and have them check it, maybe even the alternator if you can get the whole truck there ask them if they have a fuel pressure gauge put it on the fuel rail and check the pressure let it run 5-15 minutes and watch the gauge the fuel pump should be in the tank and i to have a 2000 x with a 6.8 acording to your vin u are driving a 2000 limited 4x4 with a 6.8 v10
vettman is on the right track - load test the battery, test the alternator and check the fuel pressure. If the fuel pump is bad it will show with erratic or low pressure. Hopefully you don't have to replace it as it is in the tank so you'll have to drop the tank in order to swap it out.
If you end up having to replace the fuel pump - order the strainer as well as I'm sure it's dirty after 10 years and 250k miles.
