Washed the engine compartment.....and now!

On the way home from the car wash the engine temp and engine light both came on.....crap. I pulled over right away. Got towed home by the wife's Cummins, thankfully it was dark.

Anyway, after a few hours of messing around the gauge is still maxed and the engine light is on. The engine never really seemed to have overheated and now the block is just luke warm and they are still pegged.

Whadayathink? A ground issue or water in someplace it shouldn't be. Any thoughts on what may affect both the gauge and the light?

Another question, where would I find the engine to chassis ground strap? I found a strap that runs from the rear drivers side of the block to an isolated block on the firewall but nothing to the frame.

Any chance tou washed the wires off the sendors, they are on the front. the temp light is on the front of the drivers head and just towards the passenger side on the front of the block is the guage, only about a foot or less from the temp sendor.

Thanks Star, checked them both and the wires as far back as I could follow and everything looks to be in place.

I would almost bet this happened with your lights on. start it and don't turn your lights on and see what hapens, then turn your lights on and tell me what it does.

You washed the oil off now you have to coax it to stay running till it leaks enough oil to not feel naked anymore

There's water on the over temp sensor. Pull the plug, and dry things off.

Wow, thanks for all the replies this morning.

Sycostang67, It wasn't really hot when I washed it, just drove a few blocks to the wash after 2 hours at a local restaurant.

Star, I recall turning on the key a few times last night with the headlights off and the temp gauge was still at the top, but I'll test it when you get home to be sure. What are you leading to with the headlights though?

91dirtydiesel, did your's clear up when it dried up?

fonefiddy, I'll give that a go after work. Had to put on the dark glasses and drive my wife's truck to work today....sssshhhhh.

Yeah the sensor is a simple on/ off switch. Get water into the plug, and it shows a closed switch/light on

I second the temp light sensor. If it thinks the engine is hot it will over ride the temp gauge and will pef it to the hot side.

my trucks would do that every time i washed the engines. the water shorts out the sensors. and then it takes a few days to dry them out.

so i stopped washing the engines.

One can wash the engine? Huh....

I like to leave the oil etc on it, it acts as a rust preventative. :P
