I got a call yesterday, a guy wants me to cut his truck in half, and make the rear (livestock box) into a trailer for behind his tractor. I went and looked at it today, turns out its an 89/90 superduty, with a 7.3 and 5speed. Interior is in decent shape, but the floor and cab mounts etc are rusted away. He only uses it to transport cattle from one farm to another, so doesn't want the hassle of doing safeties, maintenance etc. It's also not running right now, because the steel fuel lines underneath (likely on the cross member) have rusted through in a couple spots, so it sucks air.
I hate to cut it, but if I don't, someone else will. I can have all the cab/front end components, drive train etc, so there's a few bucks in parts to be had anyway. (A lot I can use from what I saw, the rest I can store or sell.)
Too bad I have no use for a superduty front (solid) axle for a 2wd....still lots more I can make use of though.
It does have the ebrake at the back, that was actually the first thing I noticed that started to say 'superduty'. (The fenders have F350 emblems.) then I noticed the front axle, and the 10 bolt hubs.....
So when you say it will work for a 4x4 application, you take the ebrake off, and a transfer case bolts up to it? Hmmm.... I'll have all the pedals, and associated hardware to go along with it too....
What tranny is it likely to be with it being a 5speed? I have no idea what kind of shape the clutch is in, or whether it's a dualmass or what either.
I'd love to get my hands on that solid axle, however shipping would be crazy!
That ZF5 is kinda like gold around here!
-Enjoy
fh : )_~
I don't have any use/plans for it if this deal goes through. Maine (depending on what part you're in) is only 12-15 hours each way, and there's a good chance I'll be into NY state in a month or so that would knock a few hours off the trip too.
So I got told to go ahead and cut this thing and make it into a trailer. A kind of bittersweet deal of course. Fortunately it's only 3-4 miles from here, so I'll just tow it with one of the other trucks or my farm tractor to get it here. I'll see if I can round up someone tomorrow to get it here, then I think I'll start stripping the front end off. The cab will go for scrap, but I'll clear out what I can from it, including all the clutch components in case I decide to swap the tranny into one of my automatics at some point. I also want all the hydroboost stuff, and will keep all of the emergency brake stuff too.
I can't recall the condition of the seat, and he's taken the batteries out of it since I saw it a couple weeks ago. I do know there are really good looking battery cables on it, and I'll steal that oil cooler for the truck that needs one.
Really what I'll end up keeping that will be useable will be an engine (or parts thereof), a 5speed tranny that I don't have plans for at this point, and a few miscellaneous interior parts.
Maybe I'm thinking wrong, but wasn't someone on here looking for those e-brake parts in here a while back?
