I am hoping that the person/people who really know what there talking about chime in. My question is do fuel injectors make a improvement in performance? I am not expecting to gain a million horses and a million ft lb of torque, I just want a little more pep from my 302. And what is the biggest injector I could go with, that wouldn't give me problems with a stock program. I am using my 150 more and more for hauling and towing and would like to get more power out of it for this purpose. I appreciate your time and appreciate your answer.
injectors only help if your gonna get more air in your 5.0 and more spark i mean ya you could probably go with 24lb's an hour spend like 200 bucks to get em all and run rich and gain... something i guess (worse gas mileage i suppose ) id say start with things like a pully kit , headers , roller rockers port and polish bigger throttle body and a drop in air filter then think about adding bigger injectors if its running lean
Bigger fuel injectors on a stock 302 won't do any good , unless you increase the air flow with cam , heads , headers , so on . the best way to add performance , is to improve the exhaust flow with long tube headers & free flowing exhaust ...Lew
My question is do fuel injectors make a improvement in performance?
No.. not at all, in fact using anything but the stock 19lb injectors on one of the SD motors will make it run much worse. This is one of those fundamental things about a naturally aspitated engine that most people don't understand, you can't make it produce more power by adding more fuel. The motor already gets all the fuel it needs so you have to instead increase the amount of air the motor moves, and then more fuel will increase power output. But in the case of an EFI motor you don't have to do anything to get more fuel, the computer will automatically add more using feedback from the O2 sensor. And it will do this right up to the supply limits of the stock injectors and fuel supply system.. which is upwards of 300hp.
So, do as Lew suggested and start adding some performance parts, but first make sure your truck is setup as best as possible for the job you are using it for. And that means change the axle gears because none of these 1/2 ton trucks came with proper work truck gear ratios and some of them were sabotaged with lincoln towncar gears right from the factory. For a 5.0 truck with stock or near stock sized tires that means 4.10 gears minimum, and if you have bigger tires get even more gearing. That will do more to improve the vehicles performance than any power adder short of a big block.
