I just bought an 84 BII w/2.8 auto What I was wondering if you guys can enlighten me on what the history is on these trucks. I plan on either making alittle hot rod or putting a plow on it I don't want to tear my 88 F-150 4x4 up . I hope you can help .
My suggestion: Read most of the posts here and you'll quickly learn that while most of us wouldn't trade our Baby Bronco's for anything, we are also not very pleased with the strength of them. The auto in your truck is a Ford A4LD and it is basically worthless. Don't use the overdrive EVER and it will more than likely last as a daily driver. However, using it as a plow is not suggested. The tranny won't take it. Just remember that she's old and she's been around the block a few times. Treat her right and she'll do the same for you.
If an upgrade is something you would like to do, go to the James Duff website (the link is in these pages many times) and look into it. There are many different applications such as a 4.0L, 5.0L and the 5.7L (351w) conversion. Easy enough to do if you have the time and money. Then you can use the Baby Bronco as a plow.
A Windsor swap isnt an easy one due to the size of the block. I would keep it to a 302. Ive seen 460 swaps into Rangers but it takes a lot of mods as will a 351W.
A 460 SWAP!!! Now that I would love to see.
Yes, the 351W is a little more difficult because the complete engine is 3" wider. The block on the other hand is the same. The only difference is the bore and stroke. The heads are a little wider. Same differences between the 289 and 302.
