Hey all,
So I've been taking apart my diesel so I can pull it and give it some TLC. Pulled the radiator out and finally got take a good look at it. She'll be needing some work as she's missing fins and looking pretty sad. I plan to tow with her as well as hopefully have a turbo on her by the end of the summer or so, and so I'll need a good radiator for sure!
I know I can buy them from LMC for around 400 bucks, The local lackies of autozoo/advanced probably around 350.00. We have a Radiator shop down the street from where I work and we've had work done there years ago and they've got a good reputation. Anyone able to venture a guess as to what a recore will run on this big beast of a radiator? Or should I look at just getting one from a parts house? '85 F350 6.9IDI of course.
In my experience, recoring a radiator usually costs as much, sometimes more than a new unit. I replaced mine last year with a copper/brass unit from a parts store for about $300, haven't had any problems with it.
i got a modine from a local rad. shop 300 bucks , i need to convert to distilled water though. recore or rod out i d say not worth it, in todays economy,
I just had my radiator "patched up" but it is pretty sad, they said I really need a new one, but prices were pretty high, closer to 400 or more. Where are you guys finding them for 300? It was a little cheaper for a plastic tank one, but I would rather go with all metal...
I agree, I'd skip the plastic tanks as well as I prefer the metal tanks. I'll post what the local shop says it'll cost to fix mine up when I find out.
Any thoughts on some of the aluminum ones advertised on E-Bay? Cheaper/same price than the local big box parts stores so I'm a bit hesitant to go that route.
And while we're on the topic of radiators what is a good recommended coolant system additive to run? Anything has to be better than the greenish-brown stuff that came out!
I picked up a Ready-Rad, part #432194, lists for $305.99 at schucks/O'reilly's. All copper/brass, only a 3 row but it was redesigned with 3 larger rows so it works just as well as my original 4 row.
