All this costs is a little time. Probably not the best set up, but I think on an otherwise stock motor, it's wrth it. I immediately felt a difference.
So far cat delete, and modifed air box are my only mods, and I can finally hear my turbo.
If thats how you are running your air filter, your turbo isn't going to last long. Leaving it like that isn't filtering anything. I would also ditch that and go with a napa 6637 filter.
It filters the air just like stock. The only difference is there's more air coming in. I'm just putting it out there for anyone interested in cheap hp.
The seal between the airbox and filter is notorious for not sealing. At least having the snout on front of the airbox increases the chance that any dust getting into the snout will fall out of the airstream before it gets to the filter. Your set up increases the odds of sucking dust right through that "seal."
The 6637 swap is really no more work than what you've done here once you get the parts.

Thats what i was trying to say. Thank you for clearing it up.

I wasn't aware that these seals are prone to failure. Either way, i'm gonna keep this set up until I can afford something better. I wasn't trying to pass this off as the ultimate set up. If you're stuck with the stock air box, it's an easy way to get more power out of it.

Thanks for the post. I agree it will filter like before and if you have a good seal should not hurt anything. Free mods like yours are always appreciated on this site.

Keep them coming ...
I agree with Jim and you, and the good thing is that your stock filter has the upgraded bolts (metal vs. plastic) in it, that supposses to seal better. And by other hand nobody has mentioned this mod. Im going to suggest name it as "Cudaguy" intake mod.
Reps sent for your idea and for share the post.
I think you're exaggerating a bit. The motor has survived just fine with the stock air box for 300K miles, with no noticeable wear on the motor or turbo. I gave this some thought, and just like anything else, if the filter is not installed correctly, it will let dirt into the motor. That is not a problem with the design, but rather a problem with the person installing it. If it's not to your liking, that's cool. I've done this on other vehicles with no adverse effects.
Anyone looking to eliminate their stock airbox should try this for kicks and let us know if they felt any difference.
You guys are right, if it seals super tight, i dont see a problem. All im saying is these engines suck ALOT of air. so if there is a little crack in that seal where the filter touches the top of the canister then dust is getting past that and going straight for the turbo. I had this intake on my truck when i bought it and both metal bolts holding the top piece down were stripped out and the seal was terrible. But that is my personal opinion and thats all it is. I apologize for trying to help you out on the 6637 mod.
