Ok I have a 1995 f-250 ext 7.3 and I need to buy an exhaust system. There is no exhaust at all on it now so I need everything I am trying to decide what to do. Should I do 4" or 5" straight pipe is there going to be a difference in performance or just sound. Or do I get it with a muffler and once again 4" or 5"? Do I have to worry about back pressure? Will it get better performance with the muffler? Anybody know if they will give me a hard time when I get it inspected in Massachusetts if I straight pipe it?

Any input would be greatly appreciated
True dual 4" straights would sound good and give descent power. You could even put tractor mufflers, or glasspacks on to give some awesome sound from each side as well. Since you have inspections though, you might be able to have 4" dual piping with mufflers in the middle. Personally I would think that might provide the back pressure the engine might need. 4" pipe gives better resistance and back pressure than 5 inch as well.
Like I said 5" will sound badarse lol, I know a ton of trucks with out cats and mufflers in ou area I dot belive you'll get much crap for not having either bi if our worried about it I know a shop that we can go to that doesn't check. Thre will b littlbtonno performance gain using a either or system just sound difference. If you were going 700hp then a different exhaust would be in line lol
As for back pressure goes, with diesel rhe Less the Better for the most part, quicker spool on the turbo side
bu the way, you get that ol girl Back from the body shop, you'll have to get the pictures up here for the guys, before and afters lol
hey shaun my boss who knows a lot about this stuff said when i did my exhaust that a muffler isnt needed because the turbo provides all the back pressure needed. dont know if runnin one will give better performance but i dont think so. im running a three inch downpipe that goes to four under the truck and up through five inch stack pipes and six inch tips, no muffler and no particulate filter. so no restrictions at all and ive had no problems whatsoever. if i were you find a good three inch aftermarket downpipe and run five inch, bigger is always better. think of your motor as a giant air pump, the easier the air gets in and out the better it runs and the more efficient it is. im sure some of the other guys will chime in shortly and tell you if im wrong but i dont think so, good luck.
well, more or less any exhaust is much better than no exhaust. I think some piping is a lot better than no exhaust. Well, is this 7.3 turbocharged? Less back pressure does help a turbochargers spool better. They do in fact give descent back pressure. I know these engines run pretty good with just piping.
The muffler will give you no performance advantage over straight pipe however it will actually make the turbo sound better. As far as 4" or 5", doesn't matter. 4" is cheaper than 5" and will do the same thing. 5" systems i think are 4" to the muffler and then 5" over the axle and out the back. So really your runnin 4" anyway. So my vote is for a 3" DP to 4" MBRP system with a hiflow muffler.
I put a 5" exhaust on a couple weeks ago. Im lifted 6" so I just used a straight piece of 5" and an elbow. Sounds much better than what I had (cut off right in front of where the muffler was), but my mileage has dropped since I cant keep my foot out of it now lol It sounds friggin awesome. Even my chebby lovin friends think it sounds awesome.
Haha, me too, Im going stacks. But i was just looking at performance for cost and i dont really know what his plans are so I was just giving my opinion. But everyone knows opinions are like armpits. But in the end, its up to him what he likes and what he is looking to do with this truck.
see shaun, i told you that 5" sounds sick lol Shaun curretly has a 3inch downpipe anda 5inche turnout stack under cab that a hack put it, DP is good but the stack isnt really...mounted crrectly but hasnt fallen off yet! lol
dont worry, ill have his truck runnin top notch lol
Thanks for everyones input I think I am going to buy the 5" straight pipe kit with the 3" dp. I am in the process of restoring my truck and its at the body shop getting painted up. When its all done I will be posting before and after pics to show you guys and see what you think. I think you guys will like it
