I dont have a picture of it right now, but there is a sensor in the intake manifold, right beside one of the injectors, it is practically in the center of the intake on the driverside, has a 2-wire connector going to it, i know its not the air temp sensor, that's closer to the front of the truck in the intake as well isnt it? I have a mustang 5.0 intake sitting around and it does not have the hole for the sensor in it.
i found a picture of it, its right here. would this have any effect on my truck not starting properly? i have to push the gas all the way down (flood start mode i think) for it to start, but once its started it runs great https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/a...1&d=1233623485
It might still be Intake Air Temp, some vehicles have more than one.
It might also go into a coolant passage, and in that case it might be very important. Fan switches use 1 wire, Gauge Senders too. But a 2 wire coolant sensor is usually for the computer.

i know i have a coolant sensor for the gauge, it has one wire, and i have another sensor on the front pass side of intake for the computer, it has 2 wires. This sensor is the one in the pic and it is in the intake runner in the lower intake manifold, but there's also a intake temp sensor right in front of it as well
I have two manifolds, one from a Crown Vic and one from a Thunderbird, both 5.0s. One of them has that sensor, the other has a blank spot on the manifold, so I assume it was a later addition, or something they removed later.
Anyways, if you say it doesn't go into coolant and goes into air, then it is a air temp sensor. I don't know what else it could be.
If it's not for the gauge or fan, it IS for the computer. If you are having run-ability problems, you can't troubleshoot for any other problems without fixing what you know is broken. I'd bet that is your problem, but you can't know until you replace it. Go get one, put it in, and see if it' fixes the problem. If not, we're at least free to start real troubleshooting.
why don't you pull your codes.that will tell you why it's so hard to start and possibly what that sensor is. easy enough and no guessing.
I feel like such a idiot. I was so focused on the "whats this part" that I didn't even think to address the problem or ask if the CEL was on

On that era injected 302 there are two sensors on the drivers side of the lower intake. The forward one is the Air Charge Temperature (ACT) sensor. The one just forward of the fuel pressure regulator is the knock sensor. There are no sensors on the back of the block of the 302. Just the AIR diverter valve and the AIR check valve. In fact, the only engine management sensor further back anywhere on the entire truck from the knock sensor is the O2 sensor on the exhaust.
By the way, if you need the sensor, I've got a spare. Removed it from mine when I did the mass air conversion....

The only ones I've ever seen were all on the top of the block, behind the intake manifold.
I'm still dubious on that being a knock sensor. I've got one, and it does not resemble any knock sensor I've ever seen. It looks just like a ACT sensor, and it's threaded into a hollow passage on the intake...
Remember, 85 and 86 were discreet years for EFI setups, which is why so few parts translate to later years. They are very different than the 87 & up 302s which did have the knock sensor on the back on the engine.

I can completely see where one would doubt based your experiences, but in the short time I've been around I've learned that Bill knows his ***** when it comes to these early EFI trucks.
Plus he's got the sweetest F150 4x4 on here, thats gotta count for something...
