Got stuck again yesterday and I've had it with my current tires. I have a 2wd '82 F250 HD with original 16 inch 8 lug rims. Currently I have original equipment tires 7.50 - 16 LT (old bias ply) highway commercial tires. These tires are horrible on anything other than payment. I understand the limitations of a 2wd truck and I do not plan to venture out to where this truck doesn't belong. I want a tire that can handle slightly soft grass and will fit on my original rims. This is an occasion use truck (use it to manage my honey bee colonies on weekends), so I don't want to break the bank.
I've had good luck with both the Bridgestone deulers and the Firestone Destinations. I think your tire would be around a 245/75/r16. Tires in this size are not exactly cheap, the destinations are around 40 bucks cheaper per tire on average, but still over a 100 bucks a tire. I personally have had terrible luck with goodyears, and any other cheaper tires, coopers have been hit and miss and michelins are way over priced for what you get. Just my two cents.
You can run a 225/75 or a 235/75, and there should be enough tires in those sizes to make your head spin. Anything with a little more aggressive tread should suit ya. Plus some weight in the bed over the axle never hurt.
There is no other tire I hold higher than Michelin LTX M/S tires. P265-70R16's were on my friends 4 runner with over 80,000 miles of abuse on/off road.
I have grown to like Goodyear Wrangler's but they still don't last as long as the LTX, I know for my 15'' F150 I will be swapping for them soon.
I went to costco tonight (usually a great place to buy tires), but my truck wasn't in their database. They didn't impress me with confidence in their recommendations. They recommended BFG AT/TA and suggested 235/85R/16 at a bargin basement price of $186.28 per tire!! They thought that my rims were 6 inches wide. Does that sound right?
What about their 235/85R/16 recommendation? What place has the best deal on tires of this size?
I would keep looking for the BFG A/T's. Great tires in my opinion. I use them on my 94 with 2wd and they work great in mud/snow/water. I go to school in Minnesota and havent gotten stuck yet. Not noisy on the high way but still have good tread.
