I don't really think 14-17 mpg is too bad for that truck. What's interesting to me is that it was 14 one way and 17 the other. was it 2 hours per leg of your trip or was it 2 hours all together?

It was 2 hours one way. First the highway and then the backroads coming back a couple days later. The truck did have a bike rack on the back and probably 200-300 pounds in the bed.

One way may have been more up hill or it was just more windy. I have experienced that. I know when its really windy, my MPG goes down noticably.

My 95 4x2 300, 5 speed, 235/75/15 tires and 3.08 gears will get 17 on the Maine turnpike @75 mph. If I take the back roads and drive 55-60 mileage will climb to just under 20. If I drive 60 on the pike I'll get the same mileage but I feel like a rolling road block. The back roads are much prettier and you actually have to drive. Your tires are probably eating up a couple of MPG.
