Chuck (aka TaTonka04) mention at the gtg yesterday about going to Savannah Tn; be told about a dump & dentside yard down there?
Junkyards are not the same as they use to be. I believe its harder to find parts these days than it was years ago. I usually go to the yard in Woodbury but here a while back they didn't have a hood I needed for my daughters 2001 focus. I never though it would be that hard to find one. I found one in McMinnville but they wanted about 200 for one that was dented. Then I found one for a 100 at Manchester. It was labeled a 2001. Guess what,it wasn't. They labeled it 2001 but it was a 2005 and would not fit. I wound up being able to sell it for what I had in it. A guy needed a 2005 and couldn't find the hood. I wound up finding a new one for about 100 bucks. I then had a guy locally who only charged me 25 to spray it. I got the paint for about 20 bucks. What irratates me is if you even find the part some of the yards want almost double what a new one is. There is yard in McMinnville that if I check on parts it is always almost double the cost of Woodbury.
You got to be on your toes; for the pricing of some of these yards. And its getting harder to find one that will allow you to walk thru and pull the parts yourself.
Larry Stewart had some real vintage cars in the yard before he sold it, he built a few hot rods from what was out there, Waldron's is still going, used to know John Waldron pretty good, his family owned much of Smyrna, Lavergne and parts of Murfreesboro. Knowing the leaders of Smyrna during the time Nissan was lookin for a place to build made them and the Mayor Sam Ridley a fortune, basically cheating the owners of the property out of the deal by use of inside information, buying the land cheap. Young's is a nice place, they have a data base telling places that have it if they don't.
Pelham's is a scrap metal yard mostly, not many vehicles, some Arabs have a lot next door, may be another one out that road too, can't remember, been a while since I was out there last. I used Grays as a last resort, when I was younger, friends and I came out with a bunch of parts, only paid for one, thieves. On 231 headed to Lebanon from Murfreesboro there is one, was once called Hilltop I think, it's still there. There is another one off of Bell Road in Antioch, between Hickory Hollow and Nolensville Rd.
Places have a data base, and dealer list, so selling to the public is not required or necessary, deals are over.
