I have a 2000 Expy and last night I got in turned the key and nothing. Silence. Lights work, radio works. I stuck some jumper cables on it ...nothing. I check the battery with a voltage meter and get 12.5 volts. I checked the fuse looks ok. and the fuse in the power junction box under the hood. Looks ok but I don't know what a good one looks like. I have the voltage meter on the battery and had my son try to start it looking for a drop in voltage but it only drop maybe .5 volts. Starter is new in october and I had no problems up until now. I'm not even getting the clicking sound you hear from a low battery. Anybody have any ideas? Worst part is the truck is stuck at work...a place I was planning on quitting today.
Sense you are getting some voltage drop when your son turned the key your ignition switch and neutral safety switch are probably ok . I would lean toward starter , solenoid both on starter and firewall . Just because any part was recently replaced don't ever rule it out.
Yes solenoid on firewall near battery above heater. What he was refering to above is that here are 2 solenoids. If you find where it is located you can understand the circuit and measure 12 volts occuring when engaging the key switch to start (on one side of the solenoid), if you are getting voltage on the "in" side then test the output side for voltage. If non on the output side that goes to the starter then it is broken.
Ok here's the update. I tried putting it in neutral and starting it, no good (thanks for the suggestion though). I did start it by jumping the junction on the firewall ( passenger side). Started up without a problem. So I'm figuring the problem lies somewhere between the key and that junction. BTW I promptly quit that job...they own me no more.
I am having the same problem. I replaced the solenoid and thought I had fixed the issue but it happened again yesterday. Were you able to figure out the issue?
I replaced the starter relay on the firewall on the passenger side. Nothing. So what I did was install a starter button wired from that relay to my dash and skipped the whole problem.
