This question was posed in the 48-60 trucks forum, where I usually get good answers to my questions. This time, however, I haven't heard enough factual information to make a decision as to what to do regarding my exhaust. Thought I'd narrow my search for answers.
There is a set of rams horns listed on ebay for $330 dollars... I would put headers on mine and pocket the difference by selling my 'horns... this is the way of my people. School teachers. However, there have been hints here and there that the rams horns are superior to anything else made for the 292 including headers. Does anyone have some data that would confirm or deny this? Thanks. himmelberg
Just make sure the ones on eBay are for a 272/292. I'm told the ones on the bigger truck engines (302/332) are different.
I have a '56 332 and just bought a '63 302 (or so I was told?!?). They both have ram horns. I could try to find the part numbers. The only thing I've noticed about mine that's different from the smaller ones is a small bar cast between the horns above the center bolt. This could be a later revision though.
Ram horns VS headers ??? Hi $ coated headers are the only ones that REALLY LAST.. IMHO (in my humble opinion) if the rams aren't really rust-chewed... POR-15 'em & run 'em.
If there has ever been a "Rams Horn" type exhaust manifold for the 272,292 or 312 Y block I've never seen or heard about them. I'd contact John Mummert www.ford-y-block.com and check with him he would know. I know they are not mentioned in the Eichman book and that's considered the Bible for Y blocks.
Maybe the Lincoln/big truck engines were the only ones that had rams. They can be seen in pics/drawings in the Lincoln V8 section of J Mummert's website.
If that's the case, use on 272/292/312 is VERY questionable.
OK, I stand corrected. Ford DID make a rams horn manifold for the small Y blocks. They were originally used on the cab-over trucks. It's my understanding a good set will go for $300.00 to $400.00.
My sons 1955 F100 had a set on it when he bought them. he took them of and installed a set of sanderson shorties - big improvement in performance.
This was confirmed by a gentleman at last years F100 supernats who takes the rams horns off for daily driving, and only uses them to show his truck because of the poor performance.
Also, anyone out there thinking about a pertronix conversion - DO IT! Mucho better than points, and a couple xtra mpg
