Ok so here is the scope my father in-law has a 1983 E350 motor home with a 460 carb in it. The plugs, wires, distributor, cap fuel fitler and both pumps have been replaced. The vehicle was running fine and it was parked, went to start it a week later and it runs for about 20-30 seconds and then shuts off like it is getting no fuel. Checked the relays and checked the common stuff and can't figure it out. Any ideas on what this issue could be or if anyone has had the same problem with a 460 carb for a motor home. Thanks!
First have you verified your actually getting fuel TO the carb?
I know you have replaced most of the stuff that would cause that problem like pump and filter but you need to narrow down what the problem actually is.
Well Im definitly getting fuel to the carb, I can see and smell the stream so I know it is going into the carb. I can hear the relay kicking on and Ive switched between both pumps. Ive tried the oil pressure switch (created a jumper and ensure that all is working correctly) which it is. Im not much sure what more I can check. Im basicly on hear to see if anyone else has had the problem or what it sounds like so I can attempt to narrow it down to one contained area.
Are you sure it is a fuel problem?
If it sputters, or kicks in and out and then dies, or revs up just before it dies, then it is most likely a fuel problem.
If it just shuts off, it is most likely electrical.
My 1984 F250 with a 460 did this and it was a blown fuse. The engine starts because the fuel pump is fed power from the stater solenoid when cranking and then the engine runs out of gas because the pump doesn't run with the key in the run position. Easy to test, pull the rear small wire off the starter solenoid and jumper it to +12 volts at the battery. If the truck stays running then the fuse is blown. I can't remember which fuse it is but it is not marked fuel pump.
Awsome I will definitly try to do that. Ill find it and give it a ago. Any other info on this situation is much appreciated, Ill take as much info as I can. Thanks again for all the help!
Oh yea to awnsers banjo's question it sounds like a electricl problm from what you described. It just shuts off- It doesn't want struggle or rev up, It just boggs right out then starts up fine and then shuts right back off.
Ok so after talking with my father in-law he informed me of a new discovery on the RV. When he added fuel to the front pump and attempted to start it the RV wouldnt start- the gas needle went to full and then went all the way to empty??? What is that all about but then when he attempted to start it with the rear fuel pump the RV started and stalled like its been doing? So with that said any takers on what that might be all about??? NEED HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!!
