hey i have got an 83 f100 with a 4.9 and it has had new rings put into it. the issue i am having is that now that all the parts are back together, it seems to not want to crank easily and only turns over about 2-3 times with the spark plugs installed, however if the plugs are out then it cranks faster and more easily. is there any way that the timing could be off if the timing chain stayed on the crank and the cam the whole time? the pistons were pulled out of the block by removing the head and the oil pan, did not pull the whole motor apart. or is this some other issue that seems to be hiding out of sight? any help would be welcome thanx in advance
Did you loosen the crankshaft? The camshaft is driven by a gear on the 4.9, not a chain, so if you dropped the crankshaft down a little bit to replace the bearings, then it could have jumped a tooth or two.
Pull the plugs out, squirt a little ATF or MMO in the holes, and put them back in.
Hook jumper cables up to another strong battery (make sure your battery is also fully charged) and try again.
Often after freshing up an engine, it's hard to get it to crank over the first few times. Things are MUCH tighter now than the last time it fired up.
hooked a deep cycle marine battery to the truck and that got the motor turning faster although it burnt the terminal off the end of the battery cable after only a few cranks for about 4 sec each with a pause of 1-2 minutes between the cranks
Check the battery terminals and associated cables. You might have a poor ground or too much resistance. You most likely removed the ground terminal while working on the engine. Check there first.
