I've got a 88 f-150 w/ 135,000 miles. When I got it ran decent but not great. It failed the emissions test so I started with the basic tune up: plugs, rotor, cap, wires and an oil change. I also changed out the temp sensor and TPS.
I ran it through emissions again and it failed. I took it to a shop and they diagnosed it with a bad EGR, EGR Position Sensor and a bad O2 sensor, along with a fuel pressure regulator. I replaced all of those except the regulator and now it's running so badly that black smoke is pouring out of the tail pipe. The idle bounces between 500 and 750.
I changed the plugs again and the new ones that I just put in were as black and the night.
i try to stay away from fuel infected motors, but if they said the fuel pressure reg was bad it could be putting to much fuel to the motor.
if it where a carbed motor i would check for a weak spark. retarded timing, or a maladjusted carb.
just for kicks check the spark, if its good try a new fuel regulator
I had a 89 that had this same problem. Looked like a diesel when I took off. Changed all the same crap you did. Finally said screw it took it to the ford dealer and said fix it. Was a $35 fuel pressure regulator. Simple fix. It was supposed to be like 8psi or sometin and it was pegging the guys meter at 100! If you are getting horrible gas milage that is the cause. I got like 75 miles to a tank. It was awful. I would change that regulator and I'd imagine your problem would be solved. Mine sounded like it had a big came in it the idle jumped so much.
Great information guys i also appreciate it and i have another question. My truck is doing the same thing except it runs okay at idle and once warmed up it runs very badly smells horribly rich and dies as soon as i try to stop, it is blowing white smoke. I assume this is probably the fuel pressure regulator as well? thanks for the info appreciate it

Reason: improper spelling and a small addition
I'm not to sure on your situation. The white smoke is not a good thing. That could be a head gasket? I could be wrong that would be my first guess. The map sensor could be bad and causing the running problems.
thanks for the fast reply and normally i would say your right right off the bat but its not a cloud of smoke or anything and its not rich white smoke it floods out and then i have to floor it to get it started and then it give a small cloud of smoke but u can smell its very rich either way it was good knowladge to have thanks . and im not losing water or getting milky or oily in either my pan or radiator it runs okay it just likes to die out and flood itself without throttle i will look into it further thanks for your help
Hi guys got another question for u ,like i said before theres no oil in the water or vice versa but i keep getting excess amounts of oil thru my breather cap into my air box , any ideas on that i replace the pcv the breather , and air filter with no success. thanks for your advice
PCV valve in the rear of the valve cover. Check it out, prolly needs replaced. Also check the hose that runs from the PCV valve to the intake, might be partially or fully plugged.
Yeah i actually found it this morning i just had to look thanks though no other idea on why excessive oil would be coming out of the breather into the air cleaner? thanks for all your help everyone.
Hi thanks agian for everyones help , would anyone have the ohm values for the idle air control valve and the throttle positioning sensor? and if there is a specific way to check them? i got .009 ohms for the idle air control valve on the 200 ohm setting and 895 for the throttle position sensor on the 2k ohm setting. thanks in advance guys
Im having big problems with my 4.9l. Truck originally 81 with an 87 motor put in it when I bought it. Didnt know this til yesterday. Two vacuum lines hang loose but if you plug them engine dies. EGRnot hooked up if so it dies. pcv drawing vacuum. seems to be running rich and starving for air. Don't know where to start.
