does anyone have a stock radio/cassette player laying around they don't need??
after chasing a battery draining short in my fathers crown vic for 5 months, i have determined through a process of elimination the radio is the culprit.
i came to this conclusion after putting a test light in line with the pos battery wire, and started pulling fuses.
when i pulled the radio fuse, the light went out.
the radio works fine, but something inside must be bad, and drains the battery dead in 3 days.
If you can't find one, check Ebay---there are usually plenty of them on there. I don't thing a radio from a super duty will fit properly---the SD dash is vertical---the CV dash, I believe, is slanted.
I have the 6 disc changer in dash from my 04 King Ranch that I will be selling in the near future. I just got my new radio in sat, so planning on installing it really soon.
Superduty radios are different and do not fit. The crown vic, just like the 97-03 F150 trucks use a radio where the top of the radio drops down to clear inner dash braces. The sd radios are like a rectangle box and are too large without major cutting of the dash bracing. If you want a working radio, pm me, or e mail me as I have the old one from my 02 F150 which is a factory am fm cassette, since I swapped it out for a cd radio. Ill send it to you for $20 shipping included. Bill
yup. the superduty single cd and cassette are single DIN radios. it is the CD/cassette and multi disc players that are double DIN.
and the CD/cassette was not an option in the CV/GM/lincoln until they changed the defroster ducts in 03 to accept the double DIN radios.
i have a radio with single CD player in my 99 P-71 that i took out of my 02 F250 when i put the CD/cassette player in
The part number for the radio you linked on starts 4L2 which means this
4=2004, L2=ford explorer
You could read the part numbers with this link. Reading Ford Motor Company Part Numbers
By the way, I had bought a new 02 F350 back in 02, and at that time ford did not offer a single cd radio for an 02. There were 3 choices . The xl had an am fm, and an xlt had an am fm cassette /cd and then the high end radio was an am fm 6 cd radio. Your single cd radio never came factory installed in an 02 sd as far as I know.
I also have an 05 crown vic and the dash requires the radio with the notch to clear the dash braces still.
The link was just for a picture reference to what I had. I bought my 04' new and pulled the OE radio myself and still have it.
I think 2004 was the switchover for the single CD player on the SD. My dads 03' came with the CD/Cassette, 6 disc was the only other option. Fords always changing stuff.
The radios do draw some current while they are off. That is normal.
I would not declare the radio to be bad just yet. Did you measure how much current it draws? Was the battery tested to see if it is holding a charge? Was the charging system checked to see if it is charging the battery OK?

I would not declare the radio to be bad just yet. Did you measure how much current it draws? yup. .950 amps with the ignition shut off.
Was the battery tested to see if it is holding a charge?
nope. it is new
Was the charging system checked to see if it is charging the battery OK?
yup. all the charging system tests were done multiple times over the past 9 months since the battery started dying every 4th day.
i even went as far as to buy a new battery to keep charged in the garage so i could just swap out the dead battery.
if the car is used every day, it will go a week to 10 days before the battery is dead. but just sitting only lasts 3-4 days.
since i unplugged the radio, it has sat for 2 weeks now and started rite up on saturday.
