I'm getting ready to change the tranny fluid in the truck.
I read on the pan that the gasket is reusable. Is this true or should I just get a new one.
Whats the better trans fluid and which type?
How many quarts am I looking at by changing pan fluid and the tourqe converter fluid?

Reason: Oh yeah
I could be wrong but I don't think there's a drain plug in your converter, so all you're going to get is the fluid in the pan.
If the gasket is factory or has been replaced with a OEM or equivalent, yes it should be reusable. It's stamped steel with with a bead of attached rubber on both sides, be careful while taking the pan down so you don't cut into the rubber.
trans holds 5 quarts, converter holds 8. 13 total..... i think the converters prior to 2001 have drain plugs. my 2001 has one and it was one of the last.
Did the fluid change today. Did pan and TC drain. 3 gallons of fresh trans fluid and that is one happy transmission. No more shudder and shifts smoother.
BTW what is the correct torque for the trans pan bolts?
my 2002 EXP has no converter drain. I just do the 5 quarts in the pan, bu tdo it every 60k miles. If you want to change the oil in the converter, you will need to take off one of the transmission lines to the radiator cooler and pump it out, or drain all you can.. Then you put 7-8 quarts in the trans and start motor for a few minutes, then add 2-3 morre quarts and run again, then fill as needed to full.

I think I'll take off the cooler line and get it all out..
I've been studying how to replace my ATF as well. Disconnecting lines looks like quite a job on my 2001 XL 4.2 with 4R70W. Nearly impossible at the transmission (lines are one above the other) and difficult at the radiator (especially the lower one).
Would it damage the transmission if I:
drained the pan and converter,
then temporarily reinstalled the pan and converter plug,
then ran the motor for a few seconds to pump the remaining fluid through the cooler and into the pan,
then drain the pan and converter again?

Why not take it to a reputable repair shop and have a complete fluid exchange?
