Oil leak

The motor gods are angry at me, apparently. Even though I left the Saab convertible on the charger all winter the battery is dead, dead, dead. Like 1.3 on the voltmeter dead.

So, I tried to jump it with the Super Duty. After letting the truck idle for a few minutes I gave up and put it back in its normal gravel covered parking spot. I noticed that it left a nice little oil patch on my driveway.

Crawled up under it while it idled and its pretty obvious where its coming from. Behind the oil pan there's a cresent shaped pan with a drip spout on it. Apparently a leak is preordained to drain from there. What leaks out that hole, and how to fix it?

Get a flashlight and look in the valley between the heads. You will likely see oil and that oil is draining out the drain hole at the rear pssenger side of the valley and running down the back of the block. If the oil is all the way to the front of the valley it is probably an HPOP leak. If the valley is dry toward the front but oily at the back it could be the EBPV (Exhaust Back Pressure Valve) actuator rod coming out the bottom of the pedestal, or the turbo pedestal o-rings.

Your best bet is to clean up as much of the oil as possible and then using the flashlight and a mirror try to spot where the leak is.

That drain you are looking at most people think its the rear main seal. But there is a drain at the back of the valley on top of the motor that runs down and out of there. I would say to crawl up on top of your motor and with a flashlight look at the valley. If it is wet up front by the fuel bowl it could be you High Pressure Oil Pump (hpop) there are 3 O-ring on it that can blow out. Now if the back of the valley is wet and not the front it could be your turbo pedestal. There are 4 O-rings on that 2 between the turbo and it and 2 between the valley and it. I just had to replace those on mine. Now it could also be the oil lines coming off the hpop there are O-rings on the end of those so trace those back as well but that is where I would start looking first is in the valley.

I looked at the valley without the motor running and it looked clean. Suspiciously clean, actually.

I fired it up and immediately spotted the leak at the front, buuuut its not oil, its diesel. I've sprung a leak at the bottom of the fuel/water seperator apparently. The fuel scrubbed all the old goo off, giving it that fine oily color.

That also explains the odd smell I've been getting occasionally that had me chasing a non-existent exhaust leak.

If its not raining tomorrow morning I hope to get in there and figure it out.

Most likely the o-rings in the fuel bowl drain valve. LINK to Guzzle's O-ring site. There is a PDF instruction sheet at that link.

Well, it looks like I might have gotten off easily. I figured I'd try the obvious and tighten down the fuel bowl lid before doing anything else. It turned about 1/4 of a turn waaay too easily. Tightened it down and I don't see a drop into the valley any longer, but there's still some puddles of fuel so it'll be a bit to make sure that was the only thing leaking. At least there's no visible dripping now, so I'm guessing that was all that was wrong with it.

Let me know if you need some of those O rings I have like 50 of them (not exagerating) If you need em I will drop a couple in the mail.

I have the same thing going on again. Just been to lazy to look at it. I was kinda hoping it was my lid to, but dont want to check. Kind of a pain to get those screws out of the valve.
I wonder if some of the fuel additivies and cleaners are hard on the O rings

Thanks for the offer, I really appreciate it. I'll keep an eye on it and see, but I really think that's all it needed.
