Upgrading Your Coolant System Will Prevent Major Problems!
It sounds like to me if we can keep the coolant fluid super clean and refreshed, it will keep everything cooler and prevent individual component failure (EGR & Oil Coolers, Water Pump) thus preventing serious problems.
Is this better achieved flushing the coolant system more frequently, or installing a filter and flushing the coolant system as recommended? It would appear that upgrading maintenance on the coolant system could prevent a lot of major problems.
No matter how you decide to do it, upgrading your coolant system maintenance should be a highlighted point to all 6.0L owners.
Preventitive maintenance will increase the motor life. I agree with the OP but it's an individual option. There hasn't been one specific thing that will cure the issue.
I vote for the coolant filter. It should have been factory installed after the first year of 6.0 production. Why did IH recall all the trucks with this engine and install coolant filters? I had to replace my engine due to a cascade of problems precipitated by oil cooler failure. I cut the cooler apart and it was full of casting debris. The new engine, delivery miles to the dealer only, has been filtered by Dieselsite from it's first start in my truck. The first filter was plugged solid after 350 miles, the second made 1000. I looked at the flow through the third last weekend and it was flowing well. Cutting the filters apart showed both filled full of casting debris. In my mind, this is proof enough. The other very important mod/addition is to install temperature monitoring capabilities in the cab of the truck. Gauges or PDA type monitors, your choice. You need to be able to watch the temperature difference, at operating temperature, between the engine oil temperature and the engine coolant temperature. If your truck happens to be under warranty, Ford 's policy is 15 degrees difference and you get a new oil cooler, egr cooler and a coolant change. One can argue that the cooling system is a defective POS. My opinion is that with a coolant filter and regular scheduled maintenance the problems with this system will fall into statistically similar repair numbers with other systems in the industry. No manufacturer is immune from thermostat, coolant hose, water pump and heat exchanger problems and failures. Because of the nature of our beasts, our problems become costly to repair. I monitor my temps with an Edge Insight monitor and am pleased with it. Easy install and works great. I set up page 2 with a 2 bar line graph to show the temps. My new engine runs 2 to 5 degrees difference in temperatures. With a healthy coolant system, filtered continuously, I expect it to stay in those ranges. Wish me success
Im in the process of making my own coolant filiter kit but am wondering what filters should i use. The ones that come with the kits have the longer filter. Will the shorters ones work?

The other filters will work but you have to make sure the filter is not charged. NAPA has filter 4070
