Weird Intake Pipe???

So after replacing my stock intake with the AFE, I noticed this ridiculous part.

Can someone please explain to me what the purpose of this is? The scoop starts at the back of the turbo (the hottest area of the motor) and feeds back to the intake. Why would Ford want the intake to pull in hot air? Do I need to put it back on!? Hahaha

Air Warmer...

That's the warm air intake tube - it provides warm air to the intake. S&B and Banks both still use it with their intakes. I tried an S&B for a couple of weeks and then returned it and bought the Banks Ram Air. Whatever, both companies gave you a place to re-insert the end of the hose with the white stripe back into the new intake box. I imagine they all seem to think it's necessary! Hope this helps...

Yes that explains it, but what is the point of drawing warm air into the intake? I'm very confused. The afe has a place for it too... Strange

I think I figured it out. It's a warm air intake tube used to increase the intake temperature. This in turn reduces the density of the air, reducing the amount of fuel in the fuel/air mixture, thus increasing MPG, and lowering overall power. I think I am going to do some tests with it on and with it off to see if it actually makes a difference. Anyone else think that is what it is for?

i think it is also designed to help prevent snow from stopping up your air filter like so many of us are having problems with during winter storms.

I think everybody is right on this one. Used to warm the air, maybe help to melt the snow and help to keep the A/F dry during those thunderstorms.

Maybe it works I don't know but I do know that I have never had an issue in severe rain or snow storms and blizzards.

In the workshop manuals it states the purpose as being to help the engine during cold startup and fuel mix ratios. Just seems like there should be a way to block the flow of air going into the tube, like a choke, after warm up to prevent its unnecessary need to warm up the intake air CONSTANTLY. Just my two cents. Probably not worth much. Like your new sig pics senix. Thats a beautiful toy hauler youve got there. Your 250 have any problems with her? I suppose not.

Looks nice Senix. BTW the rear window is one unit and if you forget the slide and bust out one side you have to replace the whole window. Also, it sounds like a shotgun going off when it busts and will scare the hell out of the dog and Tee off the wife. not to mention using up all your spare duct tape to get it sealed up until fixed. I'm not gonna say how I know that, but I know it.

Well, here's my thought. A while back I went to my dealer and told him I wanted a winter grill cover. He told me that if I complain that my air filter is clogging up with snow, that he could get me one under warranty. (apparently they come with one in '09-up) So naturally that's just what I told him and he ordered the cover and it came with a different gasket/baffle for the air box and a tube that pulls warm air from near the turbo. That might be what that tube is. (I didn't see the piece they put in.)

Ya I have the cover, I have no idea where it is now though. Probably hiding in my basement somewhere. Is that for the guys running in sub zero F? And about the air filters clogging with snow, is the filter or the intake tube? I just don't see how snow clogs all the way up there.

I personally didn't have the snow pack issue, but I didn't drive it through any deep snow/snowstorms. I have read posts on here from guys in Canada who were complaining of it happening time and again. The reason I wanted the winter front is because I am only driving about nine miles to work and having the cover helped it warm up on my way to and fro. I bought the truck in late January and it was a few degrees below 0 F every morning for about 1.5 weeks. (gotta love upstate NY)
