I have an 01 with 4x4 and factory hubs. One hub is very difficult to turn, and using a wrench on it it became cracked. I didn't realize they were auto hubs at the time. I have since discovered they are auto hubs, but when I give it much gas it will disengage and reengage under load (very bad). I am wondering if this could be related to the crack in the front - is that what holds the vacuum in?
Can I just get this part of it and not replace the whole hub?
This should help. Many ditch the auto hubs and replace with WARN or similar hubs. I like the auto's myself...
Chances are your hub is not fully engaging/disengaging (frozen). Try spinning axleshaft to see if its locked or grinding (partially locked). When mine were 'sticky' last time, I'd have to unlock them manually while tapping on them to get'em to unlock. The cracked/broken plastic shouldn't affect manual operation.

Thanks!!
Do you think I can get the plastic front without replacing the whole hub?

I doubt it unless you could get a whole shot hub, better yet, get a whole good hub.........should be a lot around. Next time drill a hole in the dial and set it in a bowl with ATF overnight.
