I am lookin into an 81 F150, it has a 300 c.i. and a three speed auto (c4 or c6, idk yet). I wanna know how this trucks trans. will hold up, and what kinda milage its gunna get.
I think that it has 2.25 gears, but thats just a guess.
The C6 is a tough old trans. With a 300, C6 and 2.75 gears, I can get 16-18 MPG on the highway. It isn't fast by any means, but it does have decent pickup when accelerating.
I haven't seen any 2.25 gears used behind a 300 C6 combo, but that doesn't mean it never existed. Most have 2.47, 2.75, or 3.00 gears in 81. 3.25 and 3.50 are possibilities, but no where near as common.
Not sure of the factory spec, but that seems like a lot given the 300 and the gear you are running. You'll move it, but not too fast or quick... and you'll be in second a lot with any hill action.
And don't forget trailer brakes....
Someone may have better info on the specs or direct experience with that combo....

its just around town, 2 hills max and 25-35 mph. should handle it with trailer brakes.
