ok, im new to this forum, but im thinking about buying an 84' bronco, its all set up for wheelin, but it has a 65 f100 straight 6 in it.. if i buy this bronco, im gunna have to make it pass smog.. which is a problem, with no smog on the 65 engine, is there anyone out there that has put the smog pump and what not on one of these engines? i need to know if this is a possibility that wont cost me to much to do.. so if anyone could help thatd be nice
Your '84 Bronco will have to pass the 1984 Bronco spec. Period.
Is it a 300 six? Was the Bronco originally equipped with a 300 six?
1984 would be air pump, poss egr, cat, poss feed back carb, and evap system at minimum.
1965 would be a preheat stove and a PCV.
Is it registered now?
The seller is responsible for providing a smog cert.
If he offers to get one, make sure it's legit and not some friend of his falsifying the records. The state just started a big crackdown on smoggies that phony up tests, and you'll be given no quarter if you are discovered to have a vehicle that was fraudulently passed--even it you weren't in on it.
In CA, the seller is responsible not only for the smog certificate, but is liable for any out of pocket costs the new owner has to pay to get the vehicle to pass smog.

wow they really have gone to comunism down there. around here (and the rest of the free world) its the buyers responsibility to make sure his new used vehicle meets all standards and regulations.
Actually I believe we are better off. How many people are out there who have cars for sale, which need smog checks now, and say it will pass smog. If you buy it first then you have a problem when it doesn't pass. Better to make it the sellers responsibility to be sure it passes smog since he/she may not have taken care of it or has modified it since last tested.

escape while you still can comrades
Yes, buyers here are responsible for making sure the seller has smogged the vehicle before they give him money. That and all the other standard stuff like tires, overall condition etc. This reg is no more communism than the man in the moon. I take it you'd lay out your hard earned money on the word of the seller--"It'll smog ok, you have my word on it." Then you get it to the smoggy and it's got all kinds of problems. How do you ensure against that unless you require the seller to PROVE it smogs? I don't like a lot of the smog rule nonsense, but this particular rule is the least of our worries.
I'll go further. In this state, with the smog rules as they are, it is a foolish risk to buy a vehicle without the smog check IN HAND. There've been a few on the boards crying about doing just that over the years.

Reason: be less of an ah
Here's a classic example. Been sitting for 3 years now. Non-op. Why? It should pass. Then why don't you take it down yourself? My offer... no test then $500 only.

Well what ever happened to you are responsible for what you do.
I have bought and sold vehicles that needed work, and yes I have screwed up and missed things that have cost me money, but that is my fault and my fault only, if I didn't want any risks I would never buy anything used. How do you sell a non runnung vehicle in cali. I have gotten many good deals because the owner couldn't afford to repair one.
How do you sell a non running vehicle in California? Very, very cheap and be lucky in what you get. Most of the time people have no idea why their car doesn't run. Some make up some stupid excuse like "it just needs the voltage regulator adjusted to run" and you will have a great car. I could post a link where a owner is pissed off about the 1999 Taurus he has. Says it is the worst car he has ever bought and he bought it used. So right now he is selling it for $300 with 115,000 miles. Now that is a buy if you are good with cars and that is what I mean by cheap. As for owners smogging...well that is the law.
