It not only allows for bigger tires. It raises the front, increasing ground clearance, which is important on a 4x4. Also, the weight ratio in a pickup is not very even... the bed empty is much lighter than the front of the truck. Lifting the front transfers more weight to the rear (main drive wheels) which allows for more traction and in some cases a better ride.
