Arrow What are they in?

What are the 221 and 260 engines usually found in? Are they easily located or harder to find than a dependable Chevy? Would like a V-8 with a very short stroke for a light project car,(a Porsche 914 mid-engine!) Am I a fool for wanting one of these or are they a strong engine with good potential?

The 221 and 260 are out of 60's fords. You will probally have a tough time finding one in decent cond, running or rebuildable. I would build a 289 or a 302. These are a little easier to find and will give you more power. Be sure to upgrade your suspension too! I once built a 76 nissan 280z with a 350 chevy and had severe rear squat problems, the exhaust would hit the ground under hard acceleration! Good luck with your project.

These engines aren't worth it except in a resto project. The small bore diameter shrouds the valves and they weigh just as much as a 302. Try this site for a short stroke, long rod small block ford setup: http://www.geocities.com/geo_42_99/281/281.htm

I believe they also have oddball bellhousing bolt patterns. I have been doing a little research on a light weight kit car, and if I had the money, the late 5.0 with aluminum heads would be the way to go.

This guy has some interesting info on his site.

Yes, they had a different 5-bolt bellhousing pattern. They are most common in Fairlanes, Falcons and early Mustangs up to '65. A 302 with aluminum heads, intake, water pump and a set of headers will tip the scales just over 400 lbs. By "deburring" the block and chamfering the crank journals, you could lose a few more pounds.
