Hey guys, I've been having problems with my 1994 f-250 7.3 idi. The other day I was driving down university blvd in gainesville, and my truck started bucking. Then it would be in 3rd gear and shift down to 2nd, then to 3rd again. Also today I drove down the road at about 45 mph and it started bucking again. Also when istarted from a start during acceleration it shifted from 1st to 3rd, when I pressed in the fuel pedal to keep it from stalling it jumped to 1st and jerked like heck spinning tires and throwing soot everywhere from the tail pipes.
And has anyone replaced their idi 7.3 with a 5.9 from fordcummins.com?
How is your tach and speedo acting.
If you think it may be the engine I would run a fuel pressure and volume test.
When was the last time you changed the fuel filter.
is it the c6 or the e40d? i ask because when i was fiddling with mine getting it back on the road, i managed to not know how to adjust the fuel pump injector lever sensor.
and it was really throwing a fit when i tried to drive it, it had no idea what gear to be in and to get it to move at all from a stop i just about had to floor it, witch ended in burning the tires a few times on the short trip home.
If nothing else, than by elimination, the FILP (throttle position) sensor would be the next thing to check. Look for 0.8-1.2V at idle setting and 3.85-4.5V at full power.

There are a couple of guys on here that have or are in the process of the 5.9 swap. Not sure where they sourced their parts from tho.
I've had plans to do my own swap for several years (I've bought and sold a couple of complete trucks), but the 7.3 just keeps on going. I see no reason to give up on it at this point.
I would never try to rebuild a 7.3. Cylinder walls are too thin as it is. Find a good 6.9 block and build that, you would wind up with a better engine.
If your truck is geared right, the 5.9 cummins is ok.
