When I start the truck either when its cold or hot the engine surges up and down. What I have to do to make it stop is hold the gas peddle down to about 1000 rpms for about 20-30 seconds and let it go then it idles smooth. Can not figure out whats up with it.There are no good ford diesel mechanics down here in S.W. florida. The last guy I brought it to he told me to add 2 cans of seafoam to the fuel tank and it will go away.I might as well just throw a asprin in there also,I might have the same result. It has the 6623 napa air intake ,3 1/2" down pipe leading to a 5" pipe no cat or muffler. It has a automatic tranny,2 wheel drive. It has 263000 miles with no major work done.Other than the start up problem the truck is in great shape.I tow a 7000 lb. race trailer around all winter down here in Fl. I am ready to bring the truck to a shrink I figure they can do better than the mechanics down here. Anybody have any clue whats up , thanks guys in advance
I've been using lucas truck oil 15w -40 every 5000 miles,it says it is good for all diesel brands mack. international ,cat, kenworth ect...But now that you mention it I use to run the rotella and didn't have any problem. If I remember right it started right around the time I changed oil brands.I will change my oil soon and see if this is it.And yes you can deffinately call it the romps, thats exactly what it sounds like, thanks
If that doesn't work then it may be time for o rings. That is usually caused by the oil leaking down in the HP side. It has to romp around a bit to get the air out.
Think of it like a brake hydraulic system with air in it. It's the same thing.
Lucas is not good for these engines. It has a tendency to cause the oil to foam up in these engines, which will cause the romps. F350-6 has you headed in the right direction. Change the oil, and let's see what happens from there.
Edit: I see you were using lucas oil, not the oil additive. I would change to a well known diesel oil, like rotella or chevron.
Thanks guys , I thought I was doing the right thing with the lucas oil. I guess I will go back to rotella like I use to put in it.You guys have done more for me here in 1 day than any mechanic in this area. One thing I have to say I have had this truck for 2 years now and you just can not kill them .I've only put in a alternator, water pump in and a torque converter in.The torque converter went because I broke a tranny line towing my trailer and fried the converter. once again thanks,I will let you know how it works out with the proper oil.
well guys I'm still open to suggestions. I have rotella oil in engine with a new fuel filter also.I have about 100 miles on it so far and it still surges (romps) when I start it either hot or cold. For it not to happen I have to start the truck and press the gas pedal down to 1000 rpm's for about 10 -20 seconds and then let it go and it will idle normal. Somebody had told me something about high presure oil thing but I don't know what they are talking about. This is my first diesel and don't know much about them yet. Not bad because the mechanics in this area that say they do know how to work on them and they are as lost as me. I would rather ask FTE members for a more educated answer than pay a local yocal mechanic for guessing and paying him to learn using my truck.
X2 RRanch about the O-rings I just changed my IPR o-rings and it cured my erratic idle ( sometimes) along with some other problems. it is easy to do and not that expensive, about 50.00 at the stealership.
the ipr controles the high pressure oil that runs your injectors. it sounds like when you start up it is haveing trouble controling the presure for a few seconds, maybe it has some air in there due to bad o-rings maybe it is sticking, but either way it can make it romp.
It idles great no rough idle or anything, this only happens when I start it.Where is the IPR ,and is it that cheap to repair at the stealership. I don't think the dealers know how to charge less than 100.00 for anything
Hey waljon,
nice call it did not romp when I started it in neutral. Now my next question is what the heck is a TRS.These diesels have way to many abreviations. What ever it is, is it a cheap fix,and where is it. Thanks
Glad you found the problem sorry about the abbreviation Transmission range sensor it is on the side of the tranny I personally have never had a problem with one or mine but have read about it on here quit a few times.
Welcome to FTE!! lots of nice people here and tons of info
Thanks guys ,now I will research and see how hard it is to replace it,you guys are great here. After 2 years I am starting to have to tweak things in the truck, not bad considering it has 264000 miles on it
