I just had a friend replace my ring & pinion gears from 3.73 to 4.10. How would I know if he replaced them properly. I bought the master install kit and he did not use any of the new shims. He told me that he used the old shims and just replaced the gears. The truck seems to be riding fine I put about 150 miles on it and I dont hear any grinding noises. I will be towing a 7500lb trailer in two weeks and I don't want any problems. 2002 ford f250 5.4L
Thanks
Ask him it he put a slight preload on the pinion gear and used a new crush sleeve. Other than that, assuming all the bolts are tight, noise will tell the whole story. If it is quiet it is good and won't affect towing. etc.
did he check the backlash or preload? thats why i do all my own work and if i cant do it i do allot of searching on the person im letting touch my baby. it might have been cheaper but if its set up wrong youll destroy your new investment, it pays to play.
If he didn't use any new shims, he did it the quick and dirty way. Pinion depth is probably off and backlash is probably out of spec. Did he check the engagement patterns after the installation? I doubt they came out very good.
It might be OK. It is hard to say, but if your friend did not measure anything and just used the old shims then it is probably off. How far? Only time will tell, but most people with mechanical knowledge cringe when they hear stuff like this. Even if it is close enough to "not make noise" odd are that it will at least shorten the life of the gears. Getting a cut-rate differential gear swap from a buddy will probably end up costing you more money compared to having it done properly the first time.
Questions you need to ask:
Did he use a new crush sleeve on the pinion?
Did he measure the preload?
Did he obverse the contact pattern?
If you have limited slip, did he use friction modifer?
Did he put the correct weight fluid into the differential?
As for towing, don't tow with a new gear set until it is broken in. You should put at least 500 miles on the gears before towing a load.
