i am working on a 89 f-150 5.0 liter. there is no spark it just died the other day. replaced the coil. just wondering what else it could be. cap and rotor looks fine.thanks for any help
How do you know you are not getting spark? Have you pulled a plug or installed a spark tester to verify your diagnosis? Does the truck have a tachometer? If it does, it should display some form of RPM reading during the cranking cycle. If there is no reading suspect a bad PIP sensor. It's inside the distributor. You have to pull the distributor to replace it. Many find it easier to get a new distributor.
If you have no tachometer you can try momentarily grounding the negative side of the coil with the key in the ON position, that should cause the coil to fire once. If there is no spark then it could be the Ignition Control Module (ICM).
I am not 100% sure on your '89. It could be mounted to the distributor or on the driver side fender near the master cylinder like the later model trucks.
I believe the non 460 trucks started in 1992 and the 460 had it on the fender in 1990.
But for OP his was on the distributor and that would be where I would look for his problem first.
